Becoming a Pescatarian, from a kids point of view.

March 14, 2018

I used to eat meat, for the first five years of my life, but now I'm a Pescatarian. A Pescatarian is a person who does not eat meat, but still eats fish. When my family decided to stop eating meat, they did their research and shared the information with me. Then together we stopped eating certain foods like pork, red meat, and chicken. It wasn't easy at first, especially because my taste buds were used to things like chicken tenders and hamburgers and there weren't any meatless kids meals from fast food restaurants. Can you believe that my little brother has never had a McDonald's Happy Meal? That's because when he was born we were already Pescatarian's so he doesn't even know what pork, red meat, and chicken taste like. Do you think it's easier to be born into a family that doesn't eat meat or change your eating habits as a family?  This is what it's like to change how you eat as a kid...

There are two reasons why I don't eat meat. First, because it's better for my health. Second, because by not eating meat I am helping the environment.

For parents

All you have to do is talk to your kids about the reasons why they will stop eating meat, like my parents did, if your family decides to stop too. Do it little by little. We cut out one meat at a time. Explain to them that they can still enjoy their favorite foods. There are a lot of brands that make meatless meats. My family and I made the process fun, kind of like a test taste. We tried different brands and products that taste like chicken and red meat. There are a lot of meatless meats that I enjoy. My favorites are the Meatless Chicken patties for sandwiches and Meatless Meatballs with pasta.

For kids

Learn to read labels to make sure what you want to eat isn't made from pigs, chicken, or cows. Once you do, it's easier to know what you can and can't eat. Be open-minded to try new things, like the meatless meals your mom makes. Tell your mom what you want to eat so she can find a way to make it without the animal product.

For everyone

Remember to respect the choices that people make but if you have the chance to teach someone something new, share your knowledge with them. I've been teaching my grandparents and little by little they've been changing their eating habits.
